Egypt jails blogger
Published February 22nd, 2007 in MiscellaneousWow. Nearly a whole half year since my last post. A combination of illness and changing workloads have taken priority in recent times, but I’m back in flying form again….
With all that workload and a bout of illness, I think I deserve a holiday somewhere hot. I know where I won’t be going - Egypt! Abdel Kareen Soliman was sentenced to 4 years prison time for insulting Islam, his university (Al-Azhar University headed by an Imam known as Sheikh Al-Azhar) and the Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak.
I mean, come on! What sort of image does this portray of a supposedly modern and open Egypt? How can this help their tourism industry, which is so important to them? How can it help international research links between Western universities and Egyptian ones?
I hope Abdel Kareem is released sooner rather than later. See the Free Kareem site for more on what you can do.
