Blogging the Election
Published September 8th, 2006 in MiscellaneousOnly something like 8 months to go to the next Irish general election - assuming Von Dowell doesn’t throw a spanner in the works as Tainiste. Will this be the first time that blogging hits the Irish consciousness in a big way? Despite what some Irish bloggers might think, the audience out there is currently not significant enough to change the direction of an election. We don’t have as mature a blogging community as others, particularly in the political arena. But that will change and this election may advertise blogging like never before. It will be interesting to watch how the media spreads the word that bloggers have something alternative to say about the election - unless RTE fear losing audience to the web.
Something that may grab some headlines is a conference being organised on politics and blogging. “Slugger O’Toole” has more information about this event here and who is organising it. It’s in Dublin, but at least it’s on a Saturday (October 7th) for those of us bound to an academic calendar.
I’m not saying blogging will suddenly be on everyone’s lips, but the election is bound to make a few more people curious about this whole blogging thing. It may help gather some momentum for the “blogging movement”.
