With version 5.0 of MySQL, the database now has many ‘corporate’ features more common to the likes of Oracle and DB2. One of those features is the stored programming feature with an ANSI SQL:2003 compliant procedural language supporting stored procedures, triggers and views.

In the upcoming August edition of Linux Magazine I have a 6 page article on this new feature set. It is taken from my experience with Oracle PL/SQL and adapted for MySQL’s particular nuances. For a look at the article prior to publication, you can take a look at the links on my journalism page to a PDF of the article as well as some images featuring code.

Is MySQL 5.x a rival for Oracle and DB2 in the corporate enterprise stakes? It’s probably not quite there yet. Support for replication, clustering, storage engines, spatial extensions, etc, make it a realistic option, but those making decisions in the enterprise may wait for a later release of MySQL with more mature versions of these features.
