The end of Web 2.0(sm?) - The cat is out of the bag
Published May 26th, 2006 in MiscellaneousI was sceptical about Web 2.0(sm?) and so were many of my colleagues. We thought that it was a cynical exercise by O’Reilly to perpetuate a wishy washy idea that could only further their own goals. It actually turns out we were right all along and this letter proves it.
I believe this will signal the death of Web 2.0(sm?) as O’Reilly and their cohorts feel the backlash of not just the open source community but everyone in general who was duped by this whole Web 2.0 bandwagon.
It’s just a shame that O’Reilly were not up-front about this whole thing and allowed so many people to get egg on their faces, particularly the likes of IT@Cork who I believe had very good intentions. To insinuate that there was some deliberate effort to profit from O’Reilly is scandalous and should not go without some form of retribution from the community at large. Their lawyers may be able to bully a not -or-profit organisation like IT@Cork, but let’s see them take on a whole global Internet community.
Hellew,
I can’t see the term Web2.0 dieing in the near future, as O’Reilly and others have spend too much advertising and marketing moolah on it. It didn’t take very long for the marketeers to jump on the latest buzzword, and I would imagine that they will keep the term alive as long as it is profitable for them to do so.
Though I prefer “Internet 3.0″, as termed by one of the speakers (name escapes me) at the recent IT@Cork Web2.0 conference
